The Walking Dead’s Laurie Holden Helps Rescue Girls From Sex Trafficking

She may have played the ass-kicking zombie fighter Andrea in AMC’s ‘The Walking Dead’ on seasons 1 through 3, but actress Laurie Holden’s butt-kicking career is just warming up.

Now that she doesn’t have to fight for her life on screen in the hit TV show after being killed off (hey it’s bound to happen to pretty much every character except Andrew Lincoln’s Rick Grimes) Laurie has dedicated her time to an even bigger cause then helping save the world from a fake zombie apocalypse.

She took part in a major undercover sting in Colombia and with a team of experts, rescued 55 girls from a sex slavery ring.

ABC’s ‘Nightline’ reported exclusively during the raid which was carried out by Operation Underground Railroad which is a human rights organization targeting sex traffickers around the world. They are a non-profit organization made up of former CIA, Navy Seals, Special Agents, etc who obviously possess unique and badass skills to help carry out rescue operations efficiently and effectively.

Their process is identifying the problem, and working with local law enforcement and authorities to infiltrate a sex trade operation. They set up a sting, where the team, headed up by founder and ex-CIA agent Tim Ballard, pretend to be a group of tourists looking to “buy” girls for sexual pleasure.

Once the girls are rescued and the perpetrators captured, they continue the process to make sure these offenders are put on trial and sentenced, and the victims are rehabilitated in orphans or homes (for the underage girls) that are legitimate.

As for the girls who are legally adults, all they can do is show them options for a better life, as sadly many of them don’t know any other way to earn an living and return to the sex trade even after a sting, as you can see in the video below.

In this particular operation, Laurie and the OUR team traveled to Cartagena, Colombia and managed to rescue 55 girls, many of whom were underage, from a group of predatory, disgusting men. What’s interesting is that the ABC news team had a chance to interview the perps on camera after they were arrested, and in true scum bag style they said it was a big misunderstanding and they were lying about the underage girls.

They interviewed Laurie, who couldn’t hold back her emotions about the ordeal.

“When they first showed up, some of them looked really terrified. I talked to a few of them and asked them how old they were. Some were 12. Some were 13. Most were 14. One of the girls came in, embraced me, started to cry, then I started to cry. It’s a very um….” she said before choking up, unable to complete her sentence.

An operation of this caliber was new to Laurie who has previously spent time in Cambodia helping rescue girls from brothels. But she tells ABC news she was trained to fight by Navy Seals for ‘The Walking Dead’ so she was somewhat prepared.

According to statistics from the Dosomething.org, between 20-30 million people are caught in human trafficking around the world, more than 70% of those are female, and half (HALF!!!) are children. It is not just happening in South America and developing countries, it is happening every day across the United States. This is not an issue we can choose to be ignorant about!

You don’t have to be a famous actress to make a difference, but we loudly applaud Laurie Holden for using her fame for something noble. This is the kind of headline which did not dominate news media, and wasn’t seen in many news publications. Why? Because she’s not a train wreck, a “real” housewife, a reality star, or exposing herself in some sexual, lude manner like many stars we see hogging the headlines today.

This is the problem with our media, and why we at GTHQ exist to change and challenge the online conversation about pop culture.

Well done to Laurie and the OUR team, who are also the subject of a forthcoming documentary called ‘The Abolitionists‘ focusing on Tim Ballard’s story. He literally quit his government job at Homeland Security, because after working on rescue operations for 12 years, he found out that under the US Government, they are restricted to certain areas, which meant 90% of the enslaved children of the world weren’t able to be rescued, even though Tim knew were they were.

It is an ongoing battle for freedom, that comes at a price, one that many of us in the western world can easily pay. Take a look at the undercover operation conducted in Colombia with Laurie Holden, as captured by ‘Nightline’.
