Military Women Fighting The Pentagon’s Ban On Females In Combat Roles

Major Mary Jennings Hegar (pictured below) is one of 4 military servicewomen who are suing the Pentagon who has banned women from direct combat jobs. She is a Purple Heart recipient and a helicopter pilot for the Air National Guard. Yet she has a bigger fight on her hands right now.

The ban, which has been in place officially since 1994, forbids women to fight in combat, but the women are arguing that when they are out on the front lines, they are forced to fight and work with the men anyway, so why not allow them to be trained in the first place to fight?

The lawsuit also states that prohibiting women from being formally qualified to fight in combat also prohibits them from climbing the military ranks and receive promotions.

In the Army, the suit says, 80 percent of general officers come from combat arms positions, which women are barred from holding.

These are women who have served alongside men in Iraq and Afghanistan for the last 10 years and want the same treatment as men. This case has been taken so seriously, even the Women’s Rights Project of the American Civil Liberties Union has gotten involved in supporting the military women.

About 14 percent of the 1.4 million troops in the active-duty military are women, yet 238,000 positions in the armed forces remain closed to women. Wow. These are women who are working hard to defend our country and our freedoms and shouldn’t be denied the opportunity to ascend the ranks and fight alongside men.

They are essentially giving up their life and freedoms so why not allow them to be out there on the front lines if they choose?

Do you think women should be given the same opportunities as men in the military? Do you support these women fighting the ban the Pentagon has imposed?
