Maria Shriver, Emmy Award-winning journalist and former wife of Arnold Schwarzenegger is returning to the media in a big way. NBC News announced this week they have appointed her as a special correspondent for their broadcast, reporting specifically on women’s issues, shifting roles, emerging power and the evolving needs of women in everyday life.

“I’ve always believed that television can inspire and elevate humanity, and that’s my mission with this new partnership,” said Shriver in a statement.

Maria, whose mother was President Kennedy’s sister, worked for NBC until 2003 when she was forced to quit while husband Arnold Schwarzenegger ran for governor.

NBC are thrilled to have such an accomplished woman as part of their team. “Through her reports, her books, her events, her activism and the powerful social community that she has built, Maria Shriver has become a leading voice for empowering women and inspiring all of us to be architects of change in our lives,” said Pat Fili-Krushel, the NBCUniversal News Group chairwoman, in a statement on Tuesday.

Her passion for women and their lives was a huge factor in Maria’s career and has driven her to where she is today. “I’ve always been fascinated with people’s stories — lives of triumph and adversity, stories about women and men impacting the world with their voices and their lives. That’s why I chose a career in journalism way back when: to report stories that informed, inspired, and got people thinking.”

Maria also hosts a Women’s Conference in the US which brings together powerful women from many sectors. The mission of The Women’s Conference has been to educate, inspire and empower women to be Architects of Change.

We can’t think of a better person to represent women across the board for the network. While she may have had more of a privileged upbringing than most of us, that hasn’t stopped her from reaching out her hand to use her skills and talents to make a difference. She could’ve quite easily lived a comfortable selfish life.

We look forward to seeing her reports and are excited to see how her voice will impact many difference generations of women watching her on Television.

Are you happy about the latest addition to NBC News? Do you think she will make a great correspondent and women’s representative?
