Buckle up for a big gay comedy ride with comedian Rachel Scanlon in her new stand-up special appropriately titled ‘Gay Fantasy’. Decked in some killer pink threads and armed with jokes that will leave you ROFL, Rachel unpacks the life of a powerful soft butch lesbian from hot tub trauma with her big, fat, religious, family to elaborate fantasies about gym teachers, getting caught reading, and Fergie. No queer stone is left unturned!

You’re probably already familiar with Rachel’s comedy on the podcast Two Dykes and a Mic which she co-hosts with McKenzie Goodwin. The duo recently performed at Netflix is a Joke Fest. The Midwest native who now lives in Los Angeles pays homage to her roots in her new special, and in an interview with us around the time of the ‘Gay Fantasy’ release, outlined exactly how she wants people to feel after watching her special.

Read on below to get excited (and horny)!

Congrats on the release of your comedy special ‘Gay Fantasy’? How does it feel to have it out in the world?

It’s a thrilling time. I’m so proud to be able to give queer comedy fans a full hour of content to enjoy. I like to think of it as my pride gift to the queer community.

We are already huge fans of your work on Two Dykes and Mic and were very excited to hear about this new special of yours. What can we expect in terms of content, jokes, stories etc?

This special is a vacation, a mental getaway, an hour for you to sit back and enjoy a gay fantasy. I dive into being raised a Jesus Freak in the midwest, to wanting my gym teacher crush to watch me run a marathon, to lesbian sex in a bunk bed.

Can you break down what it means to be a powerful soft butch lesbian, as described in your press release?

Being a soft butch lesbian to me, means that sometimes I get called “sir” but also I’m babygirl. I present masc but I’m completely soft on the inside. You’ll never see me wearing a dress but you WILL see me crying and singing Glee a lot.

You also talk about coming from a religious family, which might be familiar territory for many queer fans of yours. Why was it important for you to include this?

I mean, who DOESN’T know the feeling of having a crush on a girl in your youth group?! Religion is sexy and traumatic, it’s a goldmine for comedy.

In an interview with CBS in 2023 you talked about being from Minnesota and drawing form your hometown experience for your comedy. Can you talk more about your Midwest content and how audiences react to it, regardless of where they are from?

This special is really a love letter to the thiccc gays in the midwest raised on Veggie Tales and Ranch dressing. You gotta write what you know. I’m always gunna rep the Midwest.

Stand up is very different to recording a podcast. Can you talk about feeding off the audience energy IRT and how that plays a role in the stories/jokes you tell?

Stand up is so special, there is nothing like it. Getting laughs and connecting with a live audience over shared experiences is powerful and healing. The way the audience reacts can help shape the way the material feels. I feel like the audience and I are going on a journey together. If it was physically possible, I would smooch every crowd, all at once.

What do you want all people, regardless of orientation, gender, relationship status, zip code or Netflix subscription tier to feel after watching ‘Gay Fantasy’?

Horny
