Catherine Zeta-Jones Dispells Mental Health Stigmas By Talking About Struggle With Bipolar Disorder

Actress, wife and mother Catherine Zeta-Jones graces the cover of Instyle’s December Issue and opens up about her battle being bipolar. She tells the glossy mag that despite being an A-list Hollywood star, life isn’t always easy, and money does not fix every problem.

She was checked into a clinic in April 2011 to treat her bipolar disorder and from then on couldn’t stop the story going public. That happened not long after her husband Michael Douglas’ very public struggle with throat cancer. Instead of becoming a recluse and shunning questions about her disorder, she used the opportunity to open up to Instyle in the hopes it would encourage other fellow sufferers. Good on you Catherine!

Her main objective was to dispell the myths surrounding bipolar disorder and mental health issues in general. Her advice? That it is completely treatable and people should not be afraid to get help. What helped her the most was her kids and being involved in regular exercise was crucial to her physical and mental health daily.

I am so in awe of Catherine who is clearly is strong smart, accomplished and normal woman. After dealing with, no doubt, a lot of stress and anxiety all to do with her husband’s illness, I’m sure checking into a clinic and having to publicly admit to being bipolar was a big deal for her.

Its great to have role models like her who can reach out to people suffering with the same disease and let them know it is not the end of the world, help is available.
