![When people come together and organize, they can win against any kind of bully behavior and autocracy.
That’s the advice shared with us by retired labor negotiator/organizer turned author, Yvonne Martinez, who wrote a powerful post for us drawing parallels from her time at the Harvard Trade Union program in the 90’s fighting a Trump-like bully in power, to the present day socio-political landscape where Trump and his administration have wielding their position of power and authority as a weapon toward the most vulnerable.
“Authoritarianism has moved in to break the back of the grand American Democratic experiment... Immigrants and the most vulnerable are being targeted,” she writes.
Yvonne’s new book ‘Scabmuggers’ tells the story of how four women, outnumbered, fought off a Trumpian bully and his allies against every kind of bigoted, sexist abuse.
“How we did it and won, is our story,” she told us, which we were lucky enough to publish.
“What I learned in that fight at Harvard, prepared me for the fights ahead as a labor organizer in two major city campaigns, one White and one Black. [But] in the worst conditions, the powerless found their power.”
So where can we draw inspiration to fight back today? Yvonne believes that what we face is a crisis and an opportunity to rebuild our institutions from the bottom up, and by sharing her story she hopes others will find the courage not to give up.
