16 y/o US Gold Medalist Gabby Douglas On The Cover of ‘Essence’ Mag

Gabby Douglas the 16 year old gymnast from the United States was an underdog going into the London Olympics this year. But that didn’t matter to her. She had her sights set on a goal: win gold! And not only did she win gold, but became the first US gymnast to win both the individual all-around gold medal and a team gold at an Olympics. She also became the fourth American to win the title, and the first African American Gymnast to win the sport’s most revered title.

All this and she hasn’t even finished high school yet! Since then, she has had a guest role on The Vampire Diaries, made friends with the first lady Michelle Obama and scored a beauty contract with OPI Nail Colors.

The story doesn’t end there, as Douglas was picked as one of Essence Magazine’s ‘Women of the Year 2012’ and graces the cover. I love that a highschool girl who didn’t necessarily make waves in gymnastics goes on to win Gold at the olympics for her country and can still hold herself with poise and dignity as a young lady. Keep on winning Gabby, and don’t let the pressure get to you. You are an inspiration and role model to many of your peers in schools around the country.

Are you a highschool student who has a dream? What is it and what is holding you back from achieving it?
